A resurfaced video of former Vice President of Nigeria, Atiku Abubakar, is currently being circulated on social media in a misleading context.

The video, originally recorded ahead of the 2023 Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential primary, is now being used by mischief-makers to spread misinformation.

In a statement released via his official X (formerly Twitter) handle, Atiku’s aide, Paul Ibeh, via Atiku’s media office addressed the issue, emphasizing that the video is being taken out of context.

“Yes, this was former Vice President of Nigeria (1999–2007), Atiku Abubakar, speaking to journalists ahead of the 2023 PDP presidential primary,” the statement clarified. “He sounded confident because that is what is expected of a man who had worked hard and was optimistic of victory in the primaries of the 2023 election.”

The video, showing Atiku speaking assertively, was recorded at a time when he was actively campaigning for his party’s ticket. The confidence displayed in the clip, the statement noted, reflected his genuine optimism and commitment to the democratic process.

Supporters and the general public are urged to remain vigilant against politically motivated distortions, especially as misinformation continues to pose challenges in Nigeria’s political landscape.

Providing full context, the statement called on responsible media outlets and citizens to avoid falling for or amplifying content that lacks proper background or intent.
