Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Engr. Babachir Lawal, has officially resigned from the All Progressives Congress (APC), marking a significant political shift and deepening his opposition to President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

Lawal, who once served as the National Vice Chairman (Northeast) of the APC and was a close political associate of Tinubu, began distancing himself from the president in the lead-up to the 2023 general elections. A major point of contention was the APC’s controversial decision to field a Muslim-Muslim presidential ticket—Tinubu and Kashim Shettima—which Lawal publicly opposed. At the time, he declared his support for Peter Obi, the Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate.

In a formal resignation letter dated June 29 and addressed to the APC Chairman in Bangshika Ward, Hong Local Government Area of Adamawa State, Lawal confirmed his exit from the ruling party.

“I write to formally notify you of my resignation from the All Progressive Congress,” he stated. “In due course, I will make public my current political affiliations where I plan to join other compatriots to work towards making Nigeria a better living place for all its citizens. This resignation takes immediate effect. Please, remain blessed and extend my warm regards to other members of your party.”

Lawal’s departure from the APC is part of a broader political realignment. On March 20, he joined former Vice President Atiku Abubakar to unveil plans for a coalition aimed at challenging Tinubu’s presidency. That plan took a step forward on July 2 when the coalition formally took over the structure of the African Democratic Congress (ADC). At the event, Lawal was introduced as one of the key promoters of the new opposition platform.

Lawal has yet to officially announce his next political destination, but his presence at the ADC coalition event suggests a growing commitment to building a unified opposition to the current government.
