A dramatic confrontation unfolded in Bauchi State on Friday as the Deputy Governor, Auwal Jatau, allegedly slapped the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, during a high-profile event at the Emir’s Palace.
The altercation took place during the turbaning ceremony of former Governor Mohammed Abdullahi Abubakar, who was honoured with the title Makama Babba 1 of Bauchi Emirate. The ceremony coincided with the wedding of Abubakar’s daughter, Khadija Mohammed, and attracted top political figures, including Vice President Kashim Shettima and Gombe State Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya.
War of Words Turns Physical
Eyewitnesses reported that the conflict began when Minister Tuggar allegedly made critical remarks about the Bauchi State Government, led by Governor Bala Mohammed. Deputy Governor Jatau, visibly angered by the comments, reportedly responded by slapping the minister.
“It was an unbelievable moment. The Deputy Governor was furious. If not for Vice President Shettima’s quick intervention, things could’ve gotten out of hand,” a source at the event said.
Political Ambitions Fueling the Fire?
The clash appears to be rooted in a simmering political rivalry. Minister Tuggar, a prominent member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has frequently criticized the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)-led administration in Bauchi. Speculations suggest he may be eyeing a 2027 gubernatorial run in the state, putting him at odds with the current leadership.
Official Silence
As of press time, neither the Bauchi State Government nor the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has released a statement. The APC in Bauchi has also remained tight-lipped about the incident.
