Mr. Udengs Eradiri, the governorship candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the November 2023 governorship poll in Bayelsa, has appealed to President Bola Tinubu to facilitate the relocation of vital oil-related agencies to the Niger Delta region.

This call comes in the wake of Eradiri’s appreciation for President Tinubu’s approval of relocating key commercial agencies from Abuja to Lagos State.

In a statement released on Wednesday, Eradiri, a former President of the Ijaw Youths Council (IYC) and a former Commissioner in Bayelsa, emphasized the long-overdue need to decongest Abuja, the political capital of the country. He praised the decision to move certain agencies, including those of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and the Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), to Lagos, stating that these agencies had no business being in Abuja.

Eradiri highlighted Lagos as the commercial capital of Nigeria, advocating for the relocation of key commercial agencies, parastatals, and other trade-related establishments of the Federal Government to Lagos. He emphasized the importance of having their headquarters in Lagos to facilitate smooth business operations and ensure the ease of doing business in the country.

While acknowledging the positive steps taken by the government, Eradiri appealed to President Tinubu to extend the decentralization effort to the Niger Delta region. Specifically, he urged the relocation of key oil-related establishments and agencies owned by the Federal Government to cities such as Yenagoa in Bayelsa, Port Harcourt in Rivers, Uyo in Akwa Ibom, Asaba in Delta, among others.

Eradiri called on the President to compel the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) to move the headquarters of some of its subsidiaries to the capital cities of states in the Niger Delta. He emphasized that such a move would not only improve the economy of the region but also stimulate job opportunities, reduce insecurity, and contribute to the wealth redistribution agenda of President Tinubu.

In reminiscence of a previous promise made during the visit of Yemi Osinbajo as acting President, Eradiri highlighted the need to fulfill the commitment of compelling oil multinationals to relocate their offices to the Niger Delta region. He expressed optimism in the new government’s approach to decentralization and even development.

Eradiri concluded by stressing the importance of this move in preventing attacks on oil facilities by individuals who feel marginalized by the operations of oil companies in the Niger Delta region. He emphasized that relocating these agencies would foster development, provide a sense of belonging to all communities, and contribute to the overall progress of the Niger Delta region.
