In a recent session, the Benue State Assembly took notable actions, including the suspension of four members and confirming the appointment of local government caretaker committees sent by the state government.

During a recent session, the Benue State Assembly suspended four members, including Solomon Gyila, Douglass Akya, Dyako Ashwa, and Anthony Agom.

The Assembly also confirmed the appointment of 21 nominees for local government caretaker committees, rejecting two nominees from Agatu and Oju Local Government Areas.

Despite the controversy surrounding Governor Hyacinth Alia’s appointment of caretaker committees, the assembly proceeded with the confirmation.

This confirmation decision contrasts with the recent Senate resolution calling on the Federal Government to withhold statutory allocations to local councils without democratically elected officials nationwide.

Senator Abba Moro, in a motion titled “Urgent Need to Halt the Erosion of Democracy and Dissolution of Elected Councils in Benue State,” emphasized that replacing elected councils with caretaker committees violates the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

The Senate urged the Governor of Benue State to reconsider the dissolution of councils and reinstate elected officials.
