In a nail-biting encounter on Wednesday, Nigeria’s goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali showcased extraordinary skill by saving two crucial penalties in the shootout, guiding his team to a 4-2 victory over South Africa following a 1-1 draw.

This triumph earns Nigeria a coveted place in the Africa Cup of Nations final.

Despite a history of faltering in semi-finals, Nigeria overcame tense moments to secure their spot in Sunday’s decisive match. They will face either hosts Ivory Coast or the Democratic Republic of Congo, who square off later on Wednesday.

The match saw William Troost-Ekong breaking the deadlock for Nigeria with a well-taken penalty midway through the second half. However, South Africa fought back valiantly, earning a late penalty in the final minute of regular time, which was confidently converted by Teboho Mokoena to level the score.

Extra time brought added drama as South Africa was reduced to ten men after defender Grant Kekana received a red card, leaving them vulnerable to relentless Nigerian pressure. The game ultimately came down to a tense penalty shootout.

Nigeria’s Nwabali emerged as the hero, denying South Africa’s Mokoena and Evidence Makgopa with crucial saves, sealing Nigeria’s hard-fought victory and securing their place in the AFCON final.
