Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom has died at age 96. She was the longest-reigning monarch in British history, serving as the U.K.’s queen since 1952.

Buckingham Palace announced Thursday morning that the Queen was placed under medical supervision amid concerns as her family rushed to her side.

The royal family later later confirmed the Queen died that same day in a brief statement: “The Queen died peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon. The King and The Queen Consort will remain at Balmoral this evening and will return to London tomorrow.”
