Former President Muhammadu Buhari has been laid to rest in his hometown of Daura, Katsina State, following his passing on Sunday, July 13, 2025, in a hospital in London.
The somber occasion drew thousands of mourners, including top Nigerian and international dignitaries. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Vice-President Kashim Shettima led the Nigerian delegation, joining family members, friends, and supporters to pay their final respects.
Also present were foreign dignitaries, including the President of Chad, Mahamat Idriss Déby; President Umaro Sissoco Embaló of Guinea-Bissau; and the Prime Minister of Niger Republic, Ali Mahamane Lamine Zeine. Their attendance underscored Buhari’s influence across West Africa and beyond.
Nigerian lawmakers and statesmen turned out in large numbers. Among them were Deputy Senate President Senator Barau Jibrin, several current and former state governors, ministers—both serving and retired—and other high-ranking public figures.
The funeral prayer was held at the helipad area of Daura and was led by the Chief Imam of Daura, Sheikh Salisu Rabiu. The body of the late President arrived in Katsina around 2:00 p.m. and was driven to Daura at approximately 3:40 p.m.
A ceremonial gun salute honoring the former Head of State was fired between 5:32 p.m. and 5:35 p.m. before he was laid to rest around 6:00 p.m., in accordance with Islamic rites.
Former President Buhari, who ruled Nigeria from 2015 to 2023 after earlier serving as military Head of State from 1983 to 1985, leaves behind a complex legacy marked by anti-corruption campaigns, infrastructural reforms, and economic challenges.
His passing has triggered a wave of national mourning and tributes from leaders and citizens alike, commemorating a man who shaped the political trajectory of modern Nigeria.
