Renowned Nigerian author and feminist icon, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, and her husband, Dr. Ivara Esege, are mourning the death of one of their twin sons, Nkanu Nnamdi.

The heartbreaking news was confirmed in a family statement released on Thursday, January 8. According to the statement, Nkanu passed away on Wednesday, January 7, 2026, at the age of 21 months, following a brief illness.

Omawumi Ogbe, speaking on behalf of the family, described the loss as devastating and appealed to the public for understanding and privacy during this period of grief.

“We’re deeply saddened to confirm the passing of one of Ms. Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie and Dr. Ivara Esege’s twin boys, Nkanu Nnamdi, who passed on Wednesday, 7th of January 2026, after a brief illness,” the statement read.

The family expressed gratitude for the prayers and support they have received, while emphasizing their wish to mourn in private. They also noted that no further statements will be issued as they navigate this painful time.
