Nigeria’s Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, has reaffirmed the country’s commitment to fully implementing the two memoranda of understanding (MoUs) signed between the China Media Group and two key Nigerian public broadcasters—the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) and the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN)—at the last Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) in Beijing.
During a courtesy visit from Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr. Yu Dunhai, Idris emphasized that these agreements aim to strengthen bilateral cooperation in the media and communication sector, fostering deeper collaboration between Nigeria and China. The MoUs cover critical areas such as information sharing, content exchange, and technology transfer, which will enhance Nigeria’s broadcasting capabilities and enrich the country’s media landscape with global best practices.
Idris highlighted the comprehensive relationship between China and Nigeria, noting that the NTA, Africa’s largest television network, and the FRCN, one of the continent’s largest radio networks, will benefit from this partnership. He stressed the importance of factual and accurate information dissemination to further strengthen bilateral ties and sought China’s partnership in combating fake news, misinformation, and disinformation.
“Misinformation, fake news, and disinformation are global phenomena that pose a danger to the world. We know that China takes this issue very seriously, and so do we in Nigeria. We want to work with China to fight fake news and misinformation and promote useful information that can help societies grow,” Idris said.
The Minister also called on Chinese companies to take advantage of the reforms being implemented by the Tinubu administration and invest in the Nigerian economy. Ambassador Dunhai, in his remarks, expressed his commitment to deepening the existing ties between Nigeria and China and looked forward to the realization of the MoUs signed between Nigeria’s public broadcasters and the China Media Group.
At the last FOCAC in Beijing, Presidents Xi Jinping and Tinubu agreed to elevate bilateral relations to a comprehensive strategic partnership, aiming to open a new chapter in their relationship. Ambassador Dunhai recalled that President Xi Jinping had pledged $50 billion for investment in Africa within the next three years, in line with the 10 MoUs signed at the forum.
