Chinese government has denied reports that it has established a police station in Nigeria, describing it as false.
Recall that a report by Safeguard Defender captioned “110 Overseas: Chinese Transnational Policing Gone Wild” had stated that the Chinese authorities claimed that from April 2021 to July 2022, 230,000 nationals had been “persuaded to return” to face criminal proceedings in China.
According to the 21-page investigation report, the Chinese Police Station known as ‘Service Station’ is located in Benin City in Nigeria and in two other countries in Africa including Maseru in Lesotho, Dar es Salaam in Tanzania.
The report further listed other countries where the Chinese Service Stations have been established to include 35 service stations in 16 European countries, 10 service stations in six American countries and five service stations in five Asian countries.
Picking from the investigation report, some Nigerian media outlets on Tuesday reported that the said establishment of a police station in Nigeria by the People’s Republic of China.
However, reacting to the media reports, the Chinese Embassy Press Officer, Zhang Hang, in a telephone chat with AIT, denied the report, saying it was rumour based on an ill-intentioned report, made by an anti-China Human Rights Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) in Europe.
Hang said that “there is no Chinese police station in Nigeria or anywhere”, adding that what China had was “only a category of outreach service to Chinese communities.”
He noted that China did not have any intention or spare energy to run police stations outside its shores.
