Vice President Kashim Shettima’s planned trip to Samoa for the 2024 Commonwealth Heads of Government Summit has been cancelled due to an unusual incident at JFK Airport in New York.

During a stopover, a foreign object struck his plane, resulting in damage to the cockpit windscreen.

Chief Bayo Onanuga, spokesperson for President Bola Tinubu, confirmed the incident in a statement on Thursday. Repairs on the affected aircraft have already commenced.

In light of this unexpected disruption, President Tinubu has designated a new delegation to represent Nigeria at the summit, now led by Minister of Environment Balarabe Lawal.

The Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM), which began in Apia, Samoa, on October 21, is set to conclude on October 26.
