The Northern Comrades Movement of Nigeria (NCMN) has declared total support for the planned nationwide protest against hunger and economic hardship.
In a statement issued by its national chairman, Jabir Ibrahim, on Wednesday, the group urged Nigerians to come out en masse.
Mr. Ibrahim described the planned public demonstration as a fight to rescue the country’s democracy. He emphasized that the current state of the nation is unacceptable, citing repeated kidnapping incidents witnessed in the last 12 months of President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
“Youths have become an abandoned constituency without opportunities, leading to banditry, kidnapping, and other social vices in the region,” Mr. Ibrahim stated. “Fuel scarcity and skyrocketing prices of goods and services are three times higher than they were four years ago.”
He further elaborated, “Our currency is becoming worthless in value. Millions of Nigerians are facing starvation due to rising food prices and scarcity. Violation of rights, including freedom of speech and association, has become the subject of the day.”
The NCMN chairman called for collective action, saying, “As youth, we are catalysts of change, and we must protest in order to call the attention of the Federal Republic of Nigeria under this administration. We demand improved governance, economic empowerment, and effective reform mechanisms.”
The group called on well-meaning Nigerians, national, regional, grassroots youth and women organizations, and the general public to join the mass protest. The protest aims to address issues such as imposed hardship, insecurity, hunger, abject poverty, and the suppression of freedom of speech and association.
