Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Chairman of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM), has come under fire for allegedly ignoring the beginning of a viral audio clip where a Yoruba/Benin man called for the killing of Igbo children, both in Nigeria and abroad.
The audio sparked a heated response from Amaka Patience Sunnberger, who reacted by urging the poisoning of Yoruba and Benin individuals in Canada.
Critics argue that Dabiri-Erewa selectively presented the audio clip, focusing solely on Sunnberger’s threats while omitting the preceding inflammatory remarks against the Igbo children. This selective disclosure has been seen as an attempt to push a particular narrative, potentially fueling further ethnic divisions.
Following the widespread outrage sparked by the audio clip, Ms. Dabiri-Erewa announced that Sunnberger had deleted her TikTok account. Despite this, a group of Nigerians in Canada is taking formal action by reporting Sunnberger to the Canadian authorities.
Ms. Dabiri-Erewa shared the photo of Sunnberger via her official social media handle, stating: “This is the picture of the lady behind the voice. Amaka Patience Sunnberger. She has deleted her TikTok account, and a group of Nigerians in Canada are reporting her officially to the relevant authorities in Canada. Thanks for alerting everyone.”
The incident has underscored the need for careful and balanced reporting, especially in sensitive matters involving ethnic tensions, to avoid further escalation and ensure that all parties are held accountable for their actions.
