Nigerian investigative journalist David Hundeyin has issued a bold and urgent call to Peter Obi, the former presidential candidate in the 2023 election, to clarify his political intentions for the 2027 Nigerian general election or step aside for a more decisive leader.

In a fiery public statement, Hundeyin warned that Nigeria cannot afford another term of All Progressives Congress (APC) rule under President Bola Tinubu, emphasizing that the country’s future hangs in the balance. “This is not a fucking game,” Hundeyin declared, underscoring the gravity of the moment.

Hundeyin expressed frustration over Obi’s apparent indecision, labeling him the “single biggest roadblock” to forming a viable opposition strategy for 2027. He criticized Obi for failing to publicly state whether he intends to run independently, as he did in 2023 under the Labour Party, or join forces with a proposed opposition coalition to challenge Tinubu’s administration. According to Hundeyin, this lack of clarity extends to Obi’s inner circle, the broader coalition, and possibly even Obi himself, creating uncertainty that could jeopardize Nigeria’s chances of ousting the APC.

The journalist warned that Obi’s continued ambiguity risks repeating the opposition’s mistakes from the 2023 election, where a fragmented approach led to a split vote and APC’s victory. Hundeyin highlighted the danger of Obi delaying his decision until just 13 months before the 2027 election, potentially announcing a solo run that could fracture the opposition once again. Such an outcome, he argued, would doom Nigeria to another four years of what he described as a “national jail” orchestrated by external forces, including the US State Department.

Hundeyin’s statement was unequivocal in prioritizing Nigeria’s collective future over any individual’s ambitions. “I care about Nigeria and its future WAYYYY more than I care about Peter Gregory Obi,” he wrote, urging those close to Obi to push him to declare his stance. He outlined three clear options for Obi: run independently and announce it now to rally national support; openly commit to working with the opposition coalition; or step aside if he lacks the resolve to lead decisively at this critical juncture.

The journalist stressed that Nigerians’ hopes and dreams outweigh the political gamesmanship or indecision of any one person. Hundeyin’s impassioned plea reflects growing frustration among some Nigerians who see Obi as a pivotal figure but demand clarity and leadership to avoid another electoral disaster in 2027.
