In a press release on Tuesday, January 2, former Senate President David Mark appealed to the Bola Tinubu-led administration for a thorough review of the nation’s security architecture, advocating a more proactive and strategic approach to tackle the prevailing challenges.
Mark, through his media adviser Paul Mumeh, stressed the immediate need for declaring a security emergency, asserting that a comprehensive assessment is crucial to identifying vulnerabilities and implementing effective measures to halt the ongoing bloodshed.
Citing the recent tragic incidents in Plateau, where numerous citizens fell victim to senseless massacres, Mark underscored the urgent necessity of addressing the existing security challenges. “It will not be out of place to declare an emergency on security. Any step taken to end the continued killing of citizens will be worth the trouble,” he stated.
Expressing deep concern, the former two-term Senate President urged the government and security agencies to intensify their efforts, noting the perceived devaluation of life in Nigeria, as if humanity itself has been lost.
Mark appealed to the government to collaborate with subnational governments in the critical task of ensuring peace and security nationwide. He extended condolences to the government and people of Plateau state, recommending that residents remain vigilant and cooperate with security forces to prevent the recurrence of such tragic events.
Highlighting the significance of harmonious relationships among various ethnic and religious groups in the country, Mark cautioned against extreme measures in addressing grievances. He advocated for utilizing legitimate channels to address concerns rather than resorting to self-help measures.
