Former presidential candidate Peter Obi has called on Nigerians to stand strong and defend the country’s democracy, warning that a one party system could take over if people stay silent.

His message follows a recent decision by Independent National Electoral Commission affecting the leadership of the African Democratic Congress, which has increased political tension as the 2027 elections draw closer.

In a post shared on his official X account, Obi said Nigerians must not ignore what is happening, stressing that democracy is under pressure. He urged citizens, political leaders, and supporters of democracy to come together and speak out.

Obi said the country’s democratic system must be protected and rejected any move toward a one party structure. He also called on people who believe in unity, peace, and national security to take a stand.

He added that democracy can only survive if citizens stay involved and play their part. According to him, building a better Nigeria depends on people protecting the system now and for future generations.

Political observers say his statement reflects growing concern among opposition groups and civil society about too much power being held by a few. As the 2027 elections approach, they stress the need for fairness to maintain trust in the electoral process.

The African Democratic Congress and its supporters are encouraging Nigerians to stay alert, use their rights, and protect the country’s democracy, especially at a time when smaller parties risk being overshadowed by dominant political forces.
