Amid growing unease, the Department of the State Security Service (DSS) grapples with internal discontent as a director defies retirement norms, choosing to remain in service four years after officially retiring in 2020.
Kamba Damana, the current Director of the DSS Liaison Office in Ikoyi Lagos, retired on June 25, 2020, after an illustrious career that began with his enlistment into the DSS on April 1, 1990. Born on June 25, 1960, Damana turned 60 on the same day as his retirement.
The prolonged tenure of retired officials, particularly directors, has sparked dissatisfaction among junior DSS officials who lament the resulting stagnation in their careers.
The persistence of this practice is perceived as a violation of service rules, impeding growth, stifling professionalism, and limiting employment opportunities within the organization.
A confidential source within the DSS expressed concern, stating, “Damana is just one among many people in DSS who have officially retired but have refused to vacate their offices. This common practice is against the rules of the service. It hinders growth and development, stiffens professionalism, and hinders employment opportunities.”
The source urged the Federal Government to investigate the situation and take action to remove those who are no longer supposed to be in active service.
Despite attempts to seek clarification on the matter, DSS Spokesman Peter Ahunanya (Ph.D) did not respond to requests for comment, leaving the concerns surrounding the prolonged stay of retired officials unanswered.
