Afrobeats sensation David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has expressed strong criticism of Nigeria’s Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), labeling it the country’s most dangerous institution.
The singer alleged that the electoral body would not transmit election results electronically, raising concerns over the fairness of the ongoing gubernatorial election in Edo State.
In a series of posts on his X handle on Saturday, Davido urged Edo residents to vigilantly monitor their votes from polling units to the state collation center.
He posted: “The most dangerous institution in Nigeria @inecnigeria. We already know that @inecnigeria will not transmit results electronically, so everyone should be ready to follow the vote/result from the polling unit up until the state collation centre. Winning is one thing. Being declared a winner is another thing! … From 7pm make una go Dey mount collation center! #EdoDecide2024.”
The singer also accused INEC of engaging in electoral malpractice, calling out the body for failing to ensure a free and fair election. His vocal involvement in the Edo elections led to questions regarding his interest in the state’s politics, given he hails from Osun State.
In response, Davido explained that his late mother, Imade Veronica Adeleke, was originally from Edo, and that as a Nigerian, he has a vested interest in the country’s democratic process.
He pointed out that this was not the first time he had called out INEC, referencing the Osun State gubernatorial election when his uncle, Governor Ademola Adeleke, was a candidate.
“My mom is from Edo, for those wondering why I’m interested in the election… but we as Nigerians should be concerned sha. @inecnigeria shame on you. I know how many times I had to come in here and rant before they got it right in Osun! It’s really bad. God help us,” he added.
Davido had previously endorsed PDP candidate Asue Ighodalo for the Edo governorship election via his Instagram account, further solidifying his public stance on the matter.
