The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has urgently called upon Betta Edu, the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, for questioning.
The summons follows President Bola Tinubu’s prompt suspension announcement, creating a stir in response to allegations surrounding the diversion of a substantial N585.189 million grant intended for vulnerable groups in Akwa Ibom, Cross River, Ogun, and Lagos states into a private account.
President Tinubu, acting swiftly on the EFCC’s earlier recommendation, aims to facilitate an unimpeded investigation into the matter. An EFCC source reveals that the suspension of Minister Edu is seen as crucial to ensuring a thorough examination of the alleged financial misconduct.
The source emphasizes, “Our investigation into the alleged payment won’t be thorough if we didn’t recommend the Minister’s suspension. Her suspension will give us liberty to do our job thoroughly as directed by the President. An official invitation by the commission has already been sent to her. We expect her to honor the invitation to give proper insight into the issue at hand. So, we expect her to arrive here anytime soon.”
As the saga unfolds, all eyes are on the impending developments surrounding Minister Betta Edu and the serious allegations that have prompted this high-profile summons by the EFCC.
