In response to the harrowing Christmas Eve attacks in Plateau State, the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, arrived in Jos on Friday to assess the prevailing situation.

The attacks, which unfolded in Bokkos, Barkin-Ladi, and parts of Mangu, resulted in a devastating loss of over 190 lives, numerous injuries, and extensive property damage.

Welcomed by the Commissioner of Police in Plateau State, Julius Alawari, Major General Abdulsalam Abubakar, and other key security figures, the IGP’s visit holds significant weight in addressing the aftermath of the tragic events.

Scheduled to engage in a crucial stakeholder meeting with Governor Caleb Mutfwang, the police boss aims to discuss and strategize on enhancing security in the affected areas. Following this, he will proceed to Bokkos for an on-site inspection of the implemented security measures.

The urgency of the IGP’s visit is underscored by a subsequent attack on another community in the same Local Government just a day prior. The Transition Committee Chairman of Bokkos, Monday Kassah, reassured that prompt intervention by security personnel prevented further loss of life during this latest incident.

As the situation unfolds, the chairman confirmed that the current number of casualties from the Christmas Day attack stands at 195. Ongoing rescue operations are actively seeking missing individuals, emphasizing the gravity of the situation.

Breaking down the casualties, 148 lives were lost in Bokkos Local Government Area, 19 in Mangu Local Government Area, and 27 in Barkin Ladi. Property damage is substantial, with 1,290 houses burnt down in Bokkos council and one house destroyed in Mangu LGA. The extent of the devastation in Barkin Ladi is yet to be fully determined at the time of this press release.

This Yuletide season has witnessed the most severe outbreak of violence in Plateau since May, with the tragic loss of over 190 lives and hundreds injured. The IGP’s visit signals a commitment to addressing the security challenges and providing support to the affected communities during this difficult time.
