Former Kaduna State governor, Nasir el-Rufai, has urged politicians across party lines to form a broad alliance ahead of the 2027 general elections, emphasizing the need for a united effort to “save” Nigeria.
El-Rufai made this call during a condolence visit to the family of the late elder statesman and Niger Delta leader, Edwin Clark. He stressed the historical political ties between the North and South-South regions, advocating a return to such alliances for the nation’s stability.
“In the 60s, 70s, and 80s, the traditional political partners of the North were from the South-South. Let us not forget that. Let us go back to that. Let us save this country because it really requires saving. We need a rescue operation,” he stated.
The visit, led by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, also highlighted Atiku’s role in driving economic reforms during the Obasanjo administration. Segun Showunmi, a former spokesperson for Atiku’s campaign, revealed that the meeting was part of strategic discussions ahead of the 2027 elections.
El-Rufai, who has been distancing himself from the ruling APC and the administration of President Bola Tinubu, has recently engaged with opposition figures. In January, he met with Hamza Al-Mustapha, former aide to late military ruler Sani Abacha, as well as Shehu Gabam, chairman of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), and other political figures in Abuja.
His series of engagements have fueled speculations about a potential shift in his political allegiance as he positions himself for the next electoral cycle.
