Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, has paid tribute to the century-long legacy of Bigard Memorial Seminary, Enugu.

Joining formators, management, and seminarians, Obi participated in the celebrations marking the 100th anniversary of this historic institution, established in 1924.

Bigard Seminary has left an indelible mark on the Church and society by shaping generations of men dedicated to service and leadership. Among its distinguished alumni are four cardinals: the late Ignatius Cardinal Ekandem, Francis Cardinal Arinze, Christian Cardinal Tumi of Cameroon, and Peter Cardinal Okpaleke.

The seminary has also been instrumental in forming over 35 archbishops and bishops. Notable among them are His Grace Fortunatus Nwachukwu, Secretary of the Dicastery for Evangelization and the Chief Celebrant of the centennial Mass; His Grace Valerian Maduka Okeke, Archbishop of Onitsha and Metropolitan of the Onitsha Ecclesiastical Province; and His Grace Lucius Ugorji, President of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria (CBCN). Additionally, countless priests nurtured by Bigard have made significant contributions across the globe.

Reflecting on this milestone, Obi expressed his admiration and congratulations:
“I rejoice with the entire Bigard family on this impactful journey of 100 years in raising men of learning and character. I wish them continued success as they strive to build a more productive and just nation.”

Concluding his statement, Obi reaffirmed his vision for Nigeria with the reminder:”A New Nigeria is POssible.”
