The Enugu State Government has issued a stern warning against illegal tolls and motorist extortion, stating that violators will be severely punished.

In addition, the government has terminated all existing contracts for produce and haulage revenue collection held by various Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs).

These responsibilities will now be managed by service hubs, which will be set up in collaboration with Heavyhaul Services Limited. These hubs aim to cater to the needs of logistics businesses and heavy-duty vehicles transporting goods within and outside Enugu State.

These announcements were made during a press conference held at the Government House in Enugu. The conference was led by the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Chidiebere Onyia, and attended by key stakeholders.

Stakeholders, including representatives from the police, the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NUTRW), the Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN), and local traditional rulers, praised Governor Peter Mbah’s initiative and pledged their support to its implementation.

Prof. Onyia explained the government’s directive and initiative, stating, “The Enugu State Government acknowledges the crucial role of efficient logistics and transportation infrastructure in achieving our economic growth target from $4.4 billion to $30 billion naira and establishing the state as a preferred destination for business, investment, tourism, and living.”

He expressed the government’s concern over the frequent harassment and extortion of motorists and transporters by touts and hoodlums posing as revenue collectors. He condemned these actions and announced measures to curb these excesses, improve logistics and supply chain operations, and ensure the free movement of people, goods, and services in Enugu State.

To address the issue of multiple taxation on highways and criminal activities by non-state actors, the Enugu State Government plans to establish Service Centres at strategic locations across the state in partnership with Heavyhaul Services Limited.

These centres will provide a range of services, including livestock health and agro-produce diagnostic centres, designated security checkpoints, weigh stations for trucks and heavy-duty vehicles, convenience breaks and refuelling stations for drivers, enforcement of sanctions and penalties to deter industrial waste transportation, and compliance checks for the haulage of industrial goods and minerals with environmental standards. They will also offer ancillary services such as vehicle maintenance to reduce road traffic congestion due to the breakdown of heavy-duty trucks.

Prof. Onyia concluded by stating that this press release serves as a stern warning to all violators of the new directives.
