The European Union Ambassador to Nigeria, Gautier Mignot, has visited Peter Obi at his residence in Onitsha, Anambra State on Wednesday in a high level engagement that highlights continued diplomatic interaction with key Nigerian political figures.
Peter Obi, the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate and former governor of Anambra State, confirmed the visit through a post on X where he also shared a photograph of himself and the ambassador dressed in similar Igbo traditional attire. He described the meeting as enriching and noted that they exchanged useful conversations while expressing appreciation for the visit and the opportunity to host the European Union envoy.
Obi is currently regarded as one of the leading political figures positioning for the presidential ticket of the African Democratic Congress as Nigeria moves toward the 2027 general elections. His political realignment has placed him within a growing coalition of opposition politicians preparing for the next electoral cycle.
In recent weeks Obi has expanded his diplomatic and political engagements. He held a breakfast meeting in Abuja with several foreign diplomats including the British High Commissioner to Nigeria as well as representatives from Germany, Canada and France, reflecting sustained international interest in Nigeria’s political direction.
Earlier in the month, officials of the British High Commission attended the African Democratic Congress convention in Abuja, an event that drew attention due to the presence of foreign diplomatic representatives. The United Kingdom Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office later clarified that its officials routinely participate in political and civic events as part of broader democratic engagement in Nigeria and stated that such attendance reflects the United Kingdom commitment to supporting democratic processes in the country.
While diplomatic missions often maintain contact with a wide range of political actors across party lines, the participation of foreign envoys at party conventions and their public acknowledgment during such events remains relatively uncommon in Nigeria’s political environment.
Peter Obi resigned from the Labour Party in December last year and joined the African Democratic Congress, a party that includes several former members of the All Progressives Congress alongside other opposition figures seeking to reshape the political landscape ahead of 2027.
He continues to enjoy significant support particularly among young Nigerians who remain a major demographic in his political following.
