Some junior officers in the Nigerian Police, generally referred to as “rank and file” have alleged monumental corruption under the administration of the immediate-past Inspector General of Police (IGP), Alkali Baba Usman.

Some of the junior officers, who spoke to News Band on condition of anonymity, even demanded for the arrest and investigation of IGP Usman

One said: “We are suffering; no leave allowance, no public holiday, and what is due for us we don’t get it. The senior men will convert it to their own. We buy uniforms, shoes, caps, and bolting.

“Since I joined the force, I have never been given kits.

“In the last election the allowance that was supposed to be paid to us was divided in two. For instance, Inspectors are supposed to be paid N150,000, but were paid N70,000.

“From Constable in the Police is the only agency that cannot use raincoats inside rain.

“Even the salary arrears that were paid fell short; Inspectors were paid Sergeants’ arrears, while Corporals received Constables’ arrears.”

Another officer reported that during EndSARS, the federal government release money to the police for uniform and other things.

However, the officer said: “We only saw the uniform on social media while former IGP Baba who assured the personnel of uniform. Till he left office, no police officer was given uniform.

“Even the salary increments… he divided it into two. We were paid one month arrears and what we were paid didn’t reflect in monthly take home.

“Also, our election allowance was not paid.

“We want the federal government to intervene and investigate the retired IGP.”

Respecting the last increments that was done last year, another officer broke it down showing how it was paid:

“Sergeants were paid N60,000 instead of N120,000 approved by the federal government.

“Inspectors were paid N70,000 instead of N150,000 approved by the federal government of Nigeria.

“For the one month salary arrears, Sergeants were paid N57,000, while one-bar Inspectors were paid N87,000.

Senior Inspectors were paid N87,000 and the junior Inspectors were paid N68,000 for the one-month arrears that were paid before the new salary structure commenced.

See the calculation below:

Sergeants                   = 65,000 + 57,000 = N122,000

One-bar Inspector   = 89,000 + 68,000 = N157,000

Meanwhile, what the retired IGP paid is N125,300 in place of N157,000.

Senior Inspectors were paid N185,000, instead of N135,000 + N87,000 = N222,000.

One officer thanked the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the Chief of Armed Forces for retiring the Inspector General of Police.

He noted that everyone was happy on the exit of the former IGP.

He begged Mr. President to, also, help to recover every Koko the former IGP stolen from the police organization, adding that he is the most corrupt IGP the force ever had.

“He should be investigated of corruption. The increments of salary that was done in his time were not paid.

“We want the president to please use his good office to investigate the IGP over corrupt practice.”

In the meantime, watch below police officers in a video obtained by News Band celebrating the exit of former IGP Baba Alkali:
