The Nigerian government has issued a travel alert to its citizens planning to visit the United Kingdom (UK) amid ongoing violent protests and riots in several cities.
In a statement signed by the spokesperson to the Minister of Interior, Amb. Eche Abu-Obe, the government pointed out the risk of increased violence over the recent riots in the UK. The riots started after a violent knife attack on July 29, in a dance studio on Hart Street, Southport, where 11 children and 2 adults were stabbed, leading to the death of three girls.
The ministry warned that the demonstrations by far-right and other extra-parliamentary groups in parts of the UK in recent weeks have continued to grow, putting the lives of citizens at risk, especially Muslim immigrants and persons of colour.
Nigerians are advised to avoid political processions, protests, rallies, marches, crowded areas and large gatherings. The ministry also urged citizens with useful information to contact the Nigerian High Commission via e-mail at hc@nigeriahc.org.uk, or telephone at +442078391244.
The travel alert comes as the UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer vowed to prosecute the alleged misguided protesters, stating that individuals will be held on remand, charges will follow, and convictions will follow
