Nigerian-American Kelechi Ndukwe has made history by being promoted to the rank of Captain in the US Navy, becoming the first Nigerian to command a US Navy warship.
This significant achievement marks the zenith of his distinguished 20-year career in the US Navy.
Early Career and Key Roles
Ndukwe’s naval journey began in 2003 as an auxiliary’s officer, shortly after earning a master’s degree in national security and strategy studies from the US Naval War College. He has served in various leadership roles, including as the fire control officer aboard the USS Normandy from 2004 to 2006 and as the auxiliaries’ officer on the USS Thorn from 2003 to 2004. He also commanded the USS Devastator (MCM 6), a minesweeper based in Bahrain, from 2013 to 2015.
Command of USS Halsey
In 2021, Ndukwe assumed command of the USS Halsey (DDG-97), an Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer, succeeding DeVere J. Crooks. This appointment made him the first Nigerian American to lead such a prestigious vessel.
Promotion and Congratulations
The promotion ceremony, which took place in Millington, Tennessee, was celebrated by many, including fellow US Navy officer Segun Victor Agunbiade. On X (formerly Twitter), Agunbiade wrote, “Ladies and Gentlemen, meet the newest US Navy Captain Kelechi Ndukwe.
