Labour Party Presidential Candidate, Peter Obi, in his critique of Tinubu’s approach, has emphasizes that foreign investors are naturally attracted rather than actively pursued, highlighting a different perspective on engaging with international investment.
Obi during an X-space event named ‘ParallelFact,’ shared his perspective on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s frequent foreign trips.
He advocated for a strategic shift, emphasizing that Nigeria should concentrate on creating an appealing business environment to naturally attract foreign investors, rather than actively pursuing them.
This comes in response to President Tinubu’s recent remarks in an interview where he highlighted Nigeria’s engagement with the global market, targeting both foreign and domestic investors.
Tinubu stressed that Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) is a substantial, long-term financial commitment from serious enterprises and investors, not to be trivialized as ‘chicken change.’
President Tinubu asserted, “FDI is not ‘chicken change.’ It is a substantial, long-term financial commitment made by serious enterprises and investors. Currently, Nigeria is re-engaging with the global market, fostering relationships with both foreign and domestic investors.”
In reaction to Tinubu’s comments, Obi underscored the significance of creating an attractive business environment that would organically lure foreign investment into the country.
Obi expressed, “Nobody goes around searching for foreign investors. Foreign investors are like bees; when you keep the honey, they will gravitate towards it. We need to attract foreign investors and not chase after them.”
