Yunusa Tanko, the spokesman for the 2023 Labour Party (LP) Presidential Campaign Council, expressed the sentiment that Nigerians are growing weary of political figures from the “old stock,” including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.

This comes in response to confirmation from Atiku’s campaign spokesperson, Daniel Bwala, that the ex-vice president intends to contest the 2027 presidential election.

During an interview with The Punch on Wednesday, Tanko emphasized that Nigerians are eager for leaders who genuinely prioritize their welfare. Confirming that the LP’s flag bearer, Peter Obi, will be participating in the 2027 presidential race, Tanko highlighted the former Anambra State governor’s commitment to building a Nigeria that works for everyone.

Tanko acknowledged the right of any individual to pursue political ambition but stressed the importance of aligning with the aspirations of the people. He expressed that the LP believes it represents the interests of the people, particularly the Nigerian youth who are yearning for a departure from the “old stock.”

In contrast to the reported candidacy of Atiku Abubakar, Tanko suggested that supporting a younger generation, exemplified by Peter Obi, would be more meaningful in fostering unity and progress in the country. He noted that rallying behind fresh faces with a new vision could be more appreciated by the Nigerian people at this juncture.
