A violent clash between local militias in the Gbagir community of Ukum Local Government Area in Benue State has left no fewer than 45 people dead, including a family of seven.

The conflict, rooted in a struggle for supremacy, has prompted residents to flee their homes as tensions escalate. The incident, which unfolded on Tuesday, saw retaliation from rival groups after a Taraba militia leader and his family were abducted and killed despite a ransom payment.

The resurgence of violence in the Middlebelt region has displaced many communities and resulted in numerous deaths since November 2023, with recurring attacks in Agatu, Apa, Kwande, and Ukum LGAs.
