German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier will begin a three-day visit to Romania on Wednesday.

Romanian President Klaus Iohannis is expected to welcome Mr Steinmeier in Bucharest with military honours around 10:30 a.m. (0830 GMT).

The duo is expected to have a series of meetings, including a visit by Prime Minister Nicolae Ciucă.

The presidents want to honour the close bilateral relations between Germany and Romania.

The two countries signed a treaty on friendly cooperation and partnership 31 years ago, on April 21, 1992.

The war in Ukraine is also expected to be a topic of discussion.

Mr Steinmeier wanted to thank Romania for taking in hundreds of thousands of refugees from Ukraine and supporting the neighbouring country’s defensive struggle against Russia.

Romania shared a 600-kilometre border with Ukraine.

Mr Steinmeier wanted to assure the NATO partner of Germany’s solidarity.

This visit was planned several times but postponed twice due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the beginning of the Russian war in Ukraine, resulting in a shortened trip in May 2022 from three days to one.

Mr Steinmeier planned to visit Mr Iohannis’ home town of Sibiu with him.

His trip is due to end on Friday in Timișoara, which is this year’s European Capital of Culture.
