The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Joash Amupitan, has declared that his emergence as head of Nigeria’s electoral body was not by chance but part of a divine mission carried out through President Bola Tinubu.

Amupitan explained that he accepted the high profile role only after receiving what he described as a clear spiritual assurance that God would empower and guide him through the responsibilities of the office. According to him, without that conviction, he would have rejected the appointment outright.

He recounted experiencing a defining moment of faith in which he felt reassured that he would be strengthened, helped and upheld in the face of challenges. That sense of divine backing, he said, has remained a constant source of confidence as he oversees Nigeria’s electoral processes.

Speaking in Abuja during an appreciation service organized by the Nigerian Baptist Convention in honour of its outgoing president Israel Akanji and his wife Victoria, Amupitan noted that his journey in office has reinforced the importance of faith in public service. He stressed that even in difficult moments, divine support has proven decisive.

Looking toward the future, he called on Nigerians to continue praying for the commission and the country, expressing hope that the 2027 general elections would surpass previous polls in credibility and success. He emphasized that while the task is demanding, achieving a better electoral outcome is possible with both collective effort and spiritual guidance.

Amupitan also advised leaders and individuals to avoid taking on responsibilities without a clear sense of purpose and direction, noting that his experience has shown the importance of being certain before stepping into any role.
