Tragedy struck Kwara State on Sunday, April 21, 2025, as suspected gunmen launched a brutal assault in Ilesha Baruba, claiming six lives.

In a separate confrontation the same day, a local vigilante was killed during a gun battle with suspected bandits in the Kainji National Park area, near Kemanji in Baruten Local Government Area.

According to a statement released by Police Public Relations Officer, Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi, the Ilesha Baruba attack occurred around 9:30 p.m. when about ten armed men stormed the town’s motor park and opened fire at civilians gathered at a nearby relaxation spot. Six individuals—including Alhaji Ja’awire, AbdulJabar, and Mohammed Nasamu—were confirmed dead, while two others sustained serious injuries. The wounded are currently receiving medical attention, and the deceased have been taken to the Ilesha Baruba Morgue for autopsy.

In a related incident earlier that day, a patrol team from a local vigilante group encountered armed bandits during a routine sweep of the Kainji National Park forest corridor. A fierce gunfight ensued, resulting in the deaths of three suspected bandits. However, vigilante member Yusuf Samba sustained critical injuries and later died.

The police also confirmed the arrest of an informant linked to a wider network of bandits operating in the region. The suspect has reportedly provided valuable intelligence to aid ongoing investigations.

“The Kwara State Police Command has intensified tactical operations and intelligence-led patrols across the affected areas,” Ejire-Adeyemi stated. “We are committed to bringing those responsible to justice. Anyone found aiding or abetting criminal activity will face the full force of the law.”

Residents have been urged to remain vigilant and support ongoing security efforts.
