In a tragic incident that highlights the extreme consequences of unresolved disputes, a 40-year-old tea vendor, Abdulrashibu Ya’u, has been arrested in Jigawa State for beating a 20-year-old man, Hassan Garba, to death.

The altercation occurred in Sararai village, Jigawar Tsada town, within the Dutse Local Government Area of Jigawa State.

Incident Details

The incident unfolded on August 19, 2024, when Ya’u accused Garba of stealing bread, milk, noodles, and petrol from him. This accusation led to a violent confrontation, during which Ya’u tied Garba with a rope and repeatedly struck him with a stick until he became unconscious.

Police Intervention and Investigation

Following a report from the village head, the police were alerted, and a team was dispatched to the scene. Garba was rushed to Rasheed Shekoni Teaching Hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival. Ya’u was promptly arrested and taken into custody.

Confession and Motive

During interrogation at the State Criminal Investigation Department in Dutse, Ya’u confessed to the crime. He stated that Garba’s repeated thefts had infuriated him, and despite informing Garba’s parents about the issue, no action was taken. This lack of intervention allegedly drove Ya’u to take matters into his own hands, leading to the fatal beating.

Community Reaction

Neighbors reported hearing Garba’s cries for help but were unable to intervene until the police arrived. The community’s inability to stop the violence underscores the need for more effective conflict resolution mechanisms.

Legal Proceedings

DSP Lawan Shiisu Adam, the Police Public Relations Officer in Jigawa, confirmed that Ya’u will be arraigned in court after a thorough investigation. The police are committed to ensuring that Ya’u faces the full weight of the law for his actions
