United Kingdom Conservative Party leader Kemi Badenoch has doubled down on her recent remarks about Nigeria, despite criticism from Vice President Kashim Shettima.

Born in the UK but raised for a significant part of her life in Nigeria, Badenoch drew sharp reactions after openly criticizing Nigerian politicians for misusing public funds and neglecting the needs of the people.

“I grew up in Nigeria and saw firsthand what happens when politicians are in it for themselves, using public money as their private piggy banks and polluting the political atmosphere with a failure to serve others,” Badenoch said in a recent statement. “I saw what socialism is for millions—poverty and broken dreams. I came to Britain to build a life where hard work and honest endeavour lead to success.”

Shettima accused Badenoch of unfairly disparaging Nigeria. However, Badenoch remained steadfast, defending her perspective and refusing to retract her statements.

A spokesperson for Badenoch responded to the controversy, stating:
“She is proud of her leadership and commitment to telling the truth, no matter how uncomfortable it may be. She tells it like it is and stands firmly by her comments.”
