Former military president, General Ibrahim Babangida, recently shared insights into his tenure as Nigeria’s leader, asserting that he dedicated his utmost efforts to the country. This revelation emerged during an interview conducted at his residence in Minna.

Babangida, who served as a military ruler, emphasized that his most notable accomplishment as “President” was gaining a profound understanding of the nation and establishing connections across diverse segments of society. He acknowledged employing a combination of coercion and dialogue as his leadership styles.

Expressing his perspective, Babangida stated, “Number one is that I served the country the best I could. It may not be universally satisfying, but I leave that judgment to history. I related fairly well with the people of the country, having traveled extensively. I made friends nationwide, considering it one of my greatest achievements.”

The former military leader offered advice to young Nigerians aspiring to leadership roles, urging them to familiarize themselves with the citizens and gain a deeper comprehension of the country. He emphasized the importance of studying the country, its people, and fostering a strong connection with the populace.

Addressing the future leaders, Babangida remarked, “You have an opportunity now as young people; get to know the country, study the country, the people, and if you can understand that, it will go a long way in preparing you for the eventual leadership of the country.”

Furthermore, he highlighted the multifaceted nature of leadership, emphasizing the need for a nuanced approach. “Your job is to lead people. You develop a situation where people look up to you for solutions.

You have to study human beings, read about them, be very compassionate, sometimes employ ruthlessness to get things done, and employ various strategies to achieve certain goals,” Babangida advised, underscoring the diverse skill set required for effective leadership.
