President Bola Tinubu has reiterated that the removal of fuel subsidies was a necessary step to secure the future of Nigerian youths, emphasizing that his administration’s reforms aim to strengthen the nation’s economy.
However, this stance has been met with criticism following the government’s recent acquisition of a new presidential jet valued at approximately $100 million, amidst the country’s economic challenges.
Speaking on Monday at the inauguration of the National Youth Conference planning committee at the State House, Abuja, Tinubu underscored his commitment to empowering young Nigerians, who constitute over 60% of the population.
“You are the hope of this country, and every decision I have taken is about your future. Removing the fuel subsidy was necessary to protect that future. We have cleared the path for you to thrive,” Tinubu said.
He added that strengthening the nation’s economy would reduce the exodus of skilled professionals seeking better opportunities abroad. “If we grow prosperity here and empower people, they will stay and contribute to national development,” he stated.
Despite these assurances, many Nigerians have questioned the government’s decision to acquire a new Airbus A330-200 presidential jet, reportedly costing over ₦150 billion (approximately $100 million), while citizens grapple with rising costs of living and economic instability.
Many Nigerians argue that the move contradicts the administration’s calls for sacrifice and financial prudence.
Addressing the 44-member planning committee, Tinubu assured that the government would implement key recommendations from their deliberations. “This is your opportunity to shape the nation’s future. The government belongs to you, and I am here to listen and support your ideas for development,” he said.
The president also claimed that economic reforms were beginning to yield results, citing a stabilizing exchange rate, falling prices of goods, and increasing investor confidence.
Minister of Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, thanked the president for prioritizing youth development, highlighting the success of student loan schemes and key infrastructural projects.
Committee member Samson Itodo praised the initiative, noting that the upcoming conference would focus on key areas such as political governance, economic transformation, artificial intelligence, climate change, and social cohesion. The planning process will include virtual consultations, calls for memoranda, regional town halls, and a national conference in Abuja.
While Tinubu continues to defend his administration’s policies, the controversy surrounding government spending remains a significant point of debate among Nigerians facing economic hardship.
