Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has warned Nigerians to avoid using social media to report the conduct of police officers, urging them instead to direct their complaints to the Police Complaints Response Unit for a more structured and accountable resolution.
Speaking at the PPROs/Police Communication Experts’ Conference in Asaba, Delta State, on Monday, the IGP emphasized that social media often fosters misinformation and could harm the integrity of the police force.
“We appeal to the public not to resort to social media when reporting the conduct of police officers but rather use the Police Complaints Response Unit,” Egbetokun said. He stressed that this formal process allows for thorough investigation and resolution of grievances.
Acknowledging the influence of social media in shaping public opinion, Egbetokun warned that unverified information on such platforms could create false perceptions. He reiterated the commitment of the police force to transparency and accountability while recognizing the media as an essential partner in fostering trust with the public.
Governor Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta State, who inaugurated the conference, highlighted the critical need to counter misinformation and strengthen communication between the police and the public.
Both the IGP and Governor Oborevwori underscored the importance of public engagement and the role of Police Public Relations Officers in addressing misconceptions and showcasing the positive contributions of the police force.
