The Independent National Electoral Commission has given political parties extra time to submit their registers of members for the 2027 elections.

The new final deadline is now May 10, 2026, instead of the previous April 21, 2026. INEC made this announcement through its National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Mohammed Kudu Haruna.

Haruna said the extension comes after concerns raised by political parties during a meeting with the commission on March 24, 2026. The change ensures the submission period follows the 21-day rule stated in the Electoral Act 2026, while allowing parties to set their own dates for primaries.

Political parties can now hold their primaries anytime between April 23 and May 30, 2026, as long as they submit their members’ registers at least 21 days before their primaries.

This adjustment is aimed at giving parties more flexibility and helping INEC maintain a smooth electoral process.
