Despite Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), initially recognizing armed militant leader Simon Ekpa as a successor and even recommending him to anchor Radio Biafra, IPOB has firmly denied any current affiliation with Ekpa.

IPOB’s spokesperson, Emma Powerful, stated that Ekpa’s self-proclamation as “Prime Minister” of the Biafra Government in Exile does not reflect the group’s leadership or goals.

Ekpa, arrested in Finland on Thursday alongside four others on terrorism-related charges, has been accused of inciting violence and unrest in Nigeria’s South East region. Finnish authorities stated that Ekpa is under investigation for “public incitement to commit a crime with terrorist intent.” IPOB, however, distanced itself from his actions and his proclaimed leadership.

IPOB’s Official Stance

In a statement issued Friday, Emma Powerful clarified that Simon Ekpa is not a member of IPOB, either in Finland or globally, and has never been endorsed by Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, IPOB’s detained leader. Powerful described Ekpa as the leader of a rogue faction, known as “autopilot,” and alleged that his group has perpetuated violence under the guise of Biafra agitation.

“Simon Ekpa has never been a member of IPOB led by Mazi Nnamdi Kanu,” the statement read. “Contrary to reports, IPOB is a peaceful global movement that seeks Biafra independence through a United Nations-supervised referendum.”

Allegations Against Ekpa

According to IPOB, Ekpa’s activities, including calling for self-rule and coordinating violent shutdowns in the South East, have caused significant harm. Business closures linked to his directives have cost billions in losses, while his group’s violent acts have led to civilian casualties and widespread destruction.

“Ekpa’s group, the so-called Biafra Government in Exile (BGIE), created a violent militia called the Biafra Liberation Army, responsible for numerous atrocities against civilians in the Eastern Region,” Powerful alleged.

IPOB’s Commitment to Peace

The group emphasized its commitment to non-violent agitation, urging authorities and international organizations to recognize the distinction between IPOB and Ekpa’s faction.

“IPOB does not support violent agitation. Unlike Simon Ekpa, who recruits and funds criminals to terrorize civilians, IPOB has always adopted peaceful methods, including civil disobedience, to press for our demands,” the statement noted.

Call for Mazi Nnamdi Kanu’s Release

IPOB reiterated its primary focus: the release of its leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, who has been in detention for nearly four years. Despite court rulings in his favor, Kanu remains held by Nigeria’s Department of State Services (DSS).

“The Nigerian government’s efforts to link IPOB with Ekpa’s violent activities are baseless and designed to undermine our legitimate struggle. Our demand remains the same: the unconditional release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu and the peaceful pursuit of Biafra’s restoration,” IPOB stated.

Broader Implications

Simon Ekpa’s arrest has drawn varied reactions, with some praising the move as a step toward restoring peace in the South East. However, IPOB’s statement underscores the complexity of the situation, as factions within the Biafra movement diverge sharply in methods and ideologies.

The group concluded by urging calm among its members and supporters, reaffirming its dedication to non-violence and the legitimate pursuit of Biafra’s self-determination through lawful and peaceful means.
