Abia State’s Governor, Alex Otti, has proclaimed that his administration is dedicated to ensuring that the common people reap the benefits of democracy.
He contends that since 1999, when democracy was reinstated, politicians have excessively exploited the state’s resources for their own gain.
While addressing a delegation from the National Institute for Security Studies, Abuja, Course 17, Syndicate 2, at the Government House Umuahia, Otti expressed his commitment to good governance that benefits all, not just a select few politicians. He highlighted his recent initiative to clear pension arrears dating back to 2014 as evidence of his dedication to the common people, who have been neglected by the political elite.
Otti assured his audience that Abia pensioners would no longer face delays in receiving their pensions. He also announced a directive for pensions to be paid alongside workers’ salaries on the 28th of each month, a policy that took effect in April.
The Governor emphasized the importance of embracing artificial intelligence (AI), given its numerous benefits, particularly in the fields of cybersecurity and combating financial crimes. He warned of the dangers of ignoring AI, citing an instance where a US bank employee illicitly siphoned off funds using a cleverly devised code.
Otti advocated for the engagement and development of young individuals skilled in AI, as the world is increasingly leaning towards Information Communication Technology (ICT). He commended the delegation’s research theme on AI, security, and emerging economies in Africa, stressing the importance of understanding technology to combat tech-savvy criminals.
Otti also reassured his guests of his administration’s strong ties with security agencies in the state. He recalled how previous administrations misused security agents to suppress opposition, pledging never to use security forces for personal advantage. He revealed that the Afara Correctional Centre, once a holding place for political opponents, has been cleared of politically detained inmates under his administration.
