The Bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Sokoto, Bishop Matthew Kukah, is encouraging Nigerian youths to consider leaving the country, possibly in reference to the term “Japa,” which is slang used in Nigeria to describe leaving or escaping a difficult situation

However, he expressed the hope that a conducive environment would be created in Nigeria so that those who stay behind can compete favorably with their counterparts abroad.

Bishop Kukah made these remarks during the convocation ceremony of Veritas University, Abuja, where he serves as the Pro-chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council. He emphasized the importance of intellectual understanding in bringing about positive change in the country.

The Bishop urged graduates to stay focused on their dreams and not forget their alma mater. He called on teachers to be role models, as the quality of support from alumni is influenced by their experiences at the university.

Bishop Kukah shared a personal experience to emphasize that rewards for teachers are not just in heaven but also on earth. He praised the leadership of Veritas University and called on regulatory bodies to expand opportunities for universities like Veritas to contribute to education.

Addressing parents and guardians, Bishop Kukah acknowledged the sacrifices made and commended the management and staff of Veritas University for their commitment. As the Pro-chancellor, he assured continued support for the university’s development and encouraged individuals to contribute to the institution’s growth.
