As Nigeria inches closer to the 2027 presidential election, fresh political maneuvering is underway. Allies of former President Goodluck Jonathan are reportedly in talks with Mallam Rabiu Kwankwaso, the 2023 presidential candidate of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), in a bid to secure his influential northern political base.

According to a report by Vanguard published on September 11, Jonathan’s camp is actively courting Kwankwaso, with both sides allegedly holding meetings to discuss potential collaboration. A source close to the negotiations revealed that Kwankwaso’s team has proposed a vice presidential slot as part of their conditions, though Jonathan’s camp has yet to make a final decision.

Speculation continues to mount over Jonathan’s possible return to the presidential race. However, insiders say his biggest hurdle is choosing a political platform. While both the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the African Democratic Congress (ADC) are open to backing him, internal power struggles within each party could complicate his path.

Sources suggest Jonathan’s hesitation stems from concerns over rival influence within the PDP and ADC. Although the ADC is reportedly dominated by Jonathan loyalists, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar is also eyeing the same platform. Despite these challenges, Jonathan is said to be leaning toward the PDP, citing emotional ties and historical loyalty though the party remains fractured, particularly following Minister Nyesom Wike’s controversial consolidation of power.

As the political chessboard shifts, Jonathan’s next move could reshape the opposition landscape heading into 2027.
