The National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, SAN, has welcomed former President Goodluck Jonathan’s renewed commitment to playing an active role in the affairs of the party, describing it as both reassuring and timely.
Turaki spoke on Tuesday after leading a high-powered delegation comprising members of the National Working Committee (NWC), Board of Trustees (BoT), former governors, founding members, and the Forum of State Chairmen on a courtesy visit to Jonathan.
According to Turaki, the former president reaffirmed his loyalty to the PDP, stressing that he remains a card-carrying member of the party that brought him to national prominence.
“President Jonathan made it clear that the PDP has done everything possible for him as an individual, and that he still feels a deep sense of obligation to the party,” Turaki said.
He noted that Jonathan’s remarks were particularly encouraging as the PDP intensifies preparations for the off-season governorship elections in Ekiti and Osun states, as well as the 2027 general elections.
“His words are not only reassuring but very encouraging as we begin preparations for upcoming elections,” he added.
Turaki disclosed that the delegation briefed Jonathan on the current state of the party, its internal challenges, and future prospects, while also seeking his guidance and support. He also highlighted ongoing legal matters before the Court of Appeal and their implications for the party.
Reaffirming the PDP’s position in Nigeria’s political landscape, Turaki described the party as the country’s most formidable opposition platform, capable of winning elections nationwide.
“We remain the most veritable platform for contesting and winning elections in Nigeria,” he said.
The PDP chairman further promised inclusive leadership and fairness, vowing to put an end to impunity within the party.
“There will be no room for impunity. We will not allow anyone to take what does not belong to them. We will listen to Nigerians and give them what they truly want,” he declared.
Turaki concluded by emphasizing that the PDP belongs to the Nigerian people, noting that its very name reflects its democratic mission.
“This is the party of the Nigerian people, and that is why we are called the Peoples Democratic Party,” he said.
