Governor Uba Sani of Kaduna State has disclosed the financial challenges his administration is facing, inherited from his predecessor, Nasir El-Rufai. During a town hall meeting, Sani revealed that his administration is dealing with a debt of $587 million and N85 billion, along with 15 contractual obligations.

The governor highlighted the impact of fluctuating exchange rates, which have resulted in the state repaying nearly three times the original borrowed amount. He expressed concern that a large portion of the state’s federal allocation is being used to service these debts.

In March alone, Sani disclosed, N7 billion of the state’s N10 billion federal allocation was allocated for debt servicing, leaving a mere N3 billion for other expenses. This remaining amount, he noted, falls short of the state’s monthly salary bill of N5.2 billion.

Despite these financial hurdles, Governor Sani proudly stated that his administration has not incurred any additional debt in the past nine months. He emphasized his commitment to guiding Kaduna State towards progress and sustainable development, despite the inherited debt burden.

Sani also outlined his administration’s key focus areas, which include security, housing, education, healthcare, and support for Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs). He expressed his government’s intention to promote inclusive development through investments in human capital, economic stimulation, and affordable housing provision.

The Emir of Zazzau, Ambassador Ahmad Nuhu Bamali, voiced his confidence in Governor Sani’s ability to guide the state towards economic recovery. He pledged the support of traditional rulers and affirmed their commitment to the success of Governor Sani’s administration.
