Governor Abba Yusuf of Kano State has reunited 76 minors arrested during the August #EndBadGovernance protests with their families.
Represented by his Chief of Staff, Shehu Sagagi, the governor facilitated the handover ceremony at the Muhammadu Buhari Specialist Hospital, where the children were treated for various ailments sustained during their detention.
Governor Yusuf applauded President Bola Tinubu for ordering the minors’ release and urged parents to collaborate with the government to ensure the children receive proper education, stating:
“Both the Federal and state governments must ensure our children are educated to contribute to the state’s and country’s development.”
The Kano State Commissioner for Education, Haruna Doguwa, announced measures to support the minors’ academic pursuits. One protester, a final-year undergraduate, will receive assistance to complete their studies, while another with a National Certificate in Education (NCE) will be offered employment. Additionally, 50 secondary school students were provided uniforms and shoes to facilitate their return to school.
The state Commissioner for Health, Dr. Abubakar Yusuf, confirmed all minors received medical evaluations and treatment before their release. Parents expressed gratitude to the state government for the humane gesture.
In a show of support, former Sokoto State Governor Attahiru Bafarawa donated ₦50,000 to each child to aid their education.
This initiative underscores the government’s commitment to rehabilitating and reintegrating affected youth into society, emphasizing the importance of education in nation-building.
