Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State has expressed his appreciation for the peaceful conduct of local government elections held across all 44 local government areas.

After casting his vote in the Gwale local government area, he commended the support from electoral commission chairmen from other states who helped monitor the elections.

Describing the elections as the freest in Kano’s history, the governor affirmed that they took place in 484 wards throughout the state. He reassured citizens that those elected would prioritize their interests and that his administration is committed to promoting good governance.

Governor Yusuf praised the chairman and staff of the Kano State Independent Electoral Commission (KANSIEC) for their efforts in ensuring “free and fair elections” in the region. He emphasized the importance of upholding electoral integrity, stating, “When it comes to elections, there shouldn’t be any impunity, and we should ensure that people are allowed to vote their mandate.”

The governor also appealed to the judiciary to maintain neutrality in election matters, cautioning against partisanship. Despite the Kano state government being the only one to come into power under the platform of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), he urged that there should be no intimidation, reminding that the people of Kano are generally peace-loving but may react if provoked.

Referencing recent electoral events in Rivers, Governor Yusuf highlighted proactive measures taken to prevent similar issues in Kano. He concluded by urging the opposition to graciously accept defeat, citing the strong voter support for his party.

“I want to appeal to the opposition to always accept defeat as we have the upper hand in terms of voter support,” he said.
