The Minister of Defence, Bashir Salihi Magashi, has confirmed that no fewer than 64 inmates undergoing trial for terrorism were among those that escaped from the Kuje Medium Prison after the attack on Tuesday night.

He made the disclosure on Wednesday while giving update over the attack, emphasising that the attackers specifically came to free the terrorists.

He said that the attackers were on mission specifically to free the terrorists, lamenting that only one Civil Defence personnel lost his life.

Speaking similarly, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Interior, Shauib Belgore, explained that out of over 950 inmates in Kuje Prison, 600 of them escaped on Tuesday after the attack, adding that while 300 have been recaptured, others are still at large.

The forces on ground did everything to repel them but they  are determined and had their way reinforcement came 30 minutes later. They killed one of the guards, a Civil Defence officer who was trying to save the situation.

The inmates here in Kuje prison is about 994 is the population of the prison. When they broke in, they came specifically for their co-conspirators, the terrorists, but in order to get them, some of the inmates in general population escaped as well.

Some of them have return, others have reported themselves to the police and some others successfully retrieved in the bush where they are hiding. For now we have retrieved about 300 out of the 600 inmates that escaped. We have the report that they are still retrieving because there are about 60 inmates already traced to their locations,” the Permanent Secretary explained.
