Peter Obi, former Labour Party presidential candidate in 2023, has expressed deep concern over the recent demolition of the ASPAMDA Market at the Lagos Trade Fair.

Obi issued a statement via his verified X handle, framing the incident as a test of impunity, justice, and compassion.

Leaders Visit Site of Demolition

Today, Obi, alongside Senators Enyinnaya Abaribe, Victor Umeh, Col. Austin Akobundu, Tony Nwoye, Honourable Members of the House of Representatives, Labour Party Lagos gubernatorial candidate Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, and coordinator of the Obidient Movement, Tanko Yunusa, visited the affected site.

The visit highlighted the destruction of plazas at the market, despite traders having obtained all necessary approvals. Obi commended the traders for maintaining remarkable restraint amid the loss.

Call for Thorough Investigation

Obi praised the Senators and House of Representatives members who have pledged to investigate the incident thoroughly. The aim, he noted, is to uncover the circumstances behind the demolition and to prevent similar occurrences in the future.

Advocating Fairness and Economic Justice

Beyond this immediate case, Obi called on all levels of government to act with compassion, fairness, and justice. He emphasized that many affected traders invested heavily, often through loans, to sustain their livelihoods and contribute to the economy. Destroying such legitimate investments without due process, he argued, is both unjust and economically destructive.

Defending Enterprise and Citizen Dignity

“A society that seeks progress must protect enterprise, encourage productivity, and defend the dignity of its citizens,” Obi said. He stressed that incidents like the Trade Fair demolition should have no place in a nation aspiring for fairness, stability, and shared prosperity.
